Why you should compress every image you upload

Smaller files load faster, rank better and cost less to host.

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. A single unoptimized photo from a phone can be 4 to 8 MB, which is more than the rest of the page combined.

What you gain

Faster loading on mobile data, better Core Web Vitals scores, lower bandwidth bills and smoother email attachments. Most images can lose 50 to 80 percent of their size with no visible difference.

Quick rule

Resize to the largest size you will actually display, then compress. Doing both gives the biggest saving.

PNG vs JPEG vs WebP: which format should you pick?

A simple way to choose the right format every time.

PNG

Best for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with transparency or sharp text. Files are larger unless colors are reduced.

JPEG

Best for photographs. It uses lossy compression, so it is small, but it has no transparency.

WebP

Modern format that supports both transparency and lossy compression, and is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPEG or PNG. Supported by all current browsers.

Short answer: use WebP for the web, JPEG for photos shared everywhere, PNG for graphics that must stay crisp.

5 ways smaller images make your website faster

Practical steps for better speed scores and happier visitors.

1. Resize first. Do not upload a 4000 px photo for a 600 px slot.

2. Compress. Balanced quality is usually invisible to the eye.

3. Use WebP where you can for an extra saving.

4. Lazy load images below the fold with loading="lazy".

5. Name files clearly and add alt text, which helps both accessibility and SEO.

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression happens entirely in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Which setting should I use?

Balanced works for most images. Use Smallest for web thumbnails and Best quality for photos you want to keep sharp. WebP usually gives the smallest files.

Why is my PNG not much smaller?

PNG is lossless unless colors are reduced. Lower the quality, or switch the output to WebP for a bigger saving.

Can I paste a screenshot?

Yes. Press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V) anywhere on the page to add an image from your clipboard.

Is there a file size or image count limit?

There is no fixed limit. Since your device does the work, very large images (tens of megapixels) or hundreds of files at once can be slow, especially on phones. Batches of 20 to 30 images work smoothly.

Will compression reduce my image quality?

JPEG, WebP and reduced-color PNG are lossy, but at the Balanced and Best quality levels the difference is rarely visible. Use the Compare slider to check before you download.

Does it keep transparent backgrounds?

Yes for PNG and WebP. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas turn white.

Can I convert PNG to WebP or JPEG?

Yes. Choose the output format you want and the files are converted while they are compressed.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The page is fully responsive and works in modern mobile browsers. Tap the upload area to choose photos from your gallery.

What happens to EXIF data and location info?

Re-encoding removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location, which also helps privacy.

Is it free?

Yes. There are no accounts, watermarks or daily limits.
